Are you being too picky searching for the ideal candidate?

If you are struggling to get 90% of what you want when searching for a candidate, have you considered that your expectations may be slightly unrealistic?

Must they have “industry experience?” Or can you consider potential candidates with the soft skills who can be given industry experience?

As the old saying goes, “Hire for attitude, train for skill.”

A sales candidate with great soft skills is often the difference between someone remarkable who stands out and someone who does not.

These soft skills might include:
·       A strong and positive work ethic
·       Being a collaborative team player
·       Building rapport with a wide range of people
·       Being sincere and engaging
·       Being conscientious
·       Being goal orientated
·       Having empathy
·       Displaying drive

Be clear on what characteristics your team needs and don’t judge someone’s CV too soon.

Spend time phone screening in case you miss the right candidate. Ascertain if the person has the soft skills you are looking for and if so determining whether they are worth continuing to the next step in the recruitment process. Also be clear on how success is defined in your business.

While more candidates are coming on the market than late last year it is still a candidate-tight market. If you can loosen the net on your potential candidate non-negotiables you will have a wider choice.
