Just a couple of years ago, I was an employee in a large recruitment agency. Now, I stand here as a sole trader, running my own sales recruitment business. This journey, filled with challenges and victories alike, has shaped me in ways I never expected.
Back then, I only knew what I knew, and I was blissfully ignorant of the many facets of running a business. Here’s a small handful of personal insights into the evolution from employee to entrepreneur.
🔷 Wearing more hats:
I have to cover all areas of a business as an entrepreneur starting out, This meant juggling invoicing, marketing, IT and administration without a support team to assist, although I did engage a professional marketing Guru. My self confidence has grown from being forced to work in areas outside of my comfort zone.
🔷 The Learning Curve with Xero:
Before starting my business, I had never used Xero, a popular accounting software. However, since getting paid was a priority, I was quick to roll up my sleeves and dive into it. It was a challenge, but I enjoyed every bit of the learning process. Even today, as I continue to explore more functionalities of Xero, I find it quite fascinating.
🔷 The Ebb and Flow of Income:
The significant mental shift was learning to accept the variability in income. Unlike the steady pay check I was used to, it took me to time to accept that its lumpy. It ebbs and flows, based on factors such as seasonal trends, market demands, and client needs. This uncertainty was initially daunting, but over time I’ve learned to strategize, plan, and adapt my business operations to accommodate these fluctuations. Embracing this new financial reality has also enhanced my entrepreneurial acumen.
🔷 The Power of Networking and Referrals:
Networking and referrals have been crucial to my success as a sales recruiter. Running my own business has let me devote more time to these aspects. I’ve joined a rewarding networking group, where we share ideas, support each other, and celebrate successes. This has added invaluable richness to my journey.
Running my own business has been a humbling, empowering, and rewarding experience. I’ve had to quickly adapt, learn new skills, and face challenges head-on. The journey has been filled with lessons, making me wiser, stronger, and more resilient.
My advice to anyone contemplating a similar leap? Embrace the unknown, the challenges, and the growth that comes with it. After all, you don’t know what you don’t know until you take the leap.
