I’ve been hearing that some recruitment agencies are pushing candidates to work with them on an exclusive basis. Some are even going to the extreme of having them sign a contract to that effect. This significantly narrows the job opportunities for those candidates.
Agencies commonly use this method with their clients when taking on a role to fill and this makes sense. A lot of time and energy goes into sourcing a candidate and no one likes to work for free. That’s particularly so in this candidate-tight market as the majority of time is spent on targeted searches to find the right person.
I don’t believe in putting such pressure on my candidates as I don’t want them to run the risk of missing out on job opportunities. That would be monumentally unfair.
But having said that, many candidates I work with tend to lean towards me being their sole recruiter. This happens organically because we click and form a strong professional bond. But if an opportunity I don’t have on my books comes up I never stand in their way of their applying through someone else. And I always wish them well.
I enjoy working with candidates where both parties are transparent, invested and have honest and clear ongoing communication. After all, we both want the same outcome – for the candidate to be placed in a role which aligns with their experience and values, in a supportive environment that makes them happy and where they’re paid what they’re worth.
At Miller Recruitment we pride ourselves on our values and work with honesty, integrity, transparency and empathy. We understand that finding a job can be stressful and hectic, particularly while still working in your current role.
